Every year on April 28 we pay our respects to, and remember, the workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness as a result of work-related incidents. In Niagara there were 9 ceremonies organized by the Niagara District Labour Council which were schedule at different location. At these events we honour the many families and friends who have been deeply affected by these tragedies.
Standing on the bank of the Welland canal we are reminded of the tragic loss of life incurred during the construction of this project as well as the workers who died maintaining the skyway.
On this day we think of our members who have tragically died in the workplace. I remember vividly the day Joel Murray, died. Joel was a father, a husband and a friend. Days like this should never happen.
At the end of the day every worker has the right to return home safe to their friends and family. One death is too many, we all have a responsibility to each other to prevent worker injuries and deaths before they occur. Work safe, report near misses and all unsafe working conditions, talk about safety in the workplace to young workers, you could save a life.
