The election for Unifor Local 199’s Standing Committees has been announced and will be taking place Wednesday, October 16th, 2019.
The membership had expressed how pleased they were to see the amount of young workers and new hires who ran in all elections that were held this past spring. As a new generation of workers, we realize how important it is for us to learn from the valuable experiences and knowledge that those before us have to offer.
This fall, take the opportunity to become involved with our union through our Standing Committee elections. Joining one of Local 199’s Standing Committees is a great entry point to the union if you think it may be something for you. By joining you are able to familiarize yourself with the inner workings of the union, while also becoming involved and creating opportunities to give back to our community. Local 199 has a number of committees to fit your interests, these include;
- Community Services
- Education
- Environmental
- Human Rights
- LGBT+
- Recreation
- Union in Politics
- Women’s Committee
- Young Workers
I would like to highlight the importance of the Young Workers Committee. This committee allows Young Workers to discuss and raise awareness regarding issues relevant to us in our workplace & community. It is a great place to begin to familiarize yourself with the structures and culture of the union. The committee strives to maintain an active and informed young membership. You do not have to be experienced with the Union to join this committee, as this is the best place to start! Over the past 4 years young workers have attended conferences in Toronto and Port Elgin, raised funds and collected clothes for RAFT, help organize a trivia night in partnership with the United Way and submitted resolutions for the bargaining convention.
