As the final vote counts are being tabulated, Rob Ford and the conservatives have a majority government in Ontario, Andrea Horwath and the NDP will lead the official opposition party and the liberals may lose official party status.
In Niagara ridings, St Catharines – Jennie Stevens NDP defeated the longest serving member of the legislation, Liberal Jim Bradley who came in third. Niagara Falls – Wayne Gates NDP, former president of Unifor Local 199 won convincingly by 9,000 votes. Niagara Central – Jeff Birch NDP, former city councillor won. In Niagara West, Conservative Sam Oosterhoff was re-elected, this was an interesting riding with three candidates under 21 years of age. Curtis Fric first time candidate received over 13,000 votes.
As the election results are finalized the question that must be asked is how can a Majority government be elected with only 40 percent of the popular vote. It has been said time and time again, proportional representation needs to be implemented to level the political playing field.
