International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls

Greetings,

How will your local take action to address gender-based violence this year? On November 25, the world marks the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls. This day begins 16 days of international action lasting from November 25 to December 10, Human Rights Day, but our efforts to end violence are required on every day.The United Nations calls violence against women one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in the world today.

In Canada, we also observe December 6 as our National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. We remember the 13 engineering students and 1 worker who were murdered at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal on December 6, 1989 by an act of gender-based violence. We also commemorate missing and murdered Indigenous women, trans women and every woman whose life has been harmed or cut short because of gender-based violence. Addressing and stopping gender-based violence is an important call to action and every member is encouraged to take actions in the short and long-term.

Here are three things you can do right now:

  1. Distribute and post Unifor’s December 6 poster, social media shareable and statement to send a message about the need to end violence. The materials are attached and available at unifor.org/women.
  2. Attend a vigil/event and support calls to action to end sexism, harassment and violence in your local and your community. Please share details about vigils/event with communications@unifor.org
  3. Make a commitment to speak out to stop sexism in any form – including sexist jokes.

Then build these practices into your Local:

  1. Negotiate to include Unifor’s model anti-harassment, respectful workplace training and joint investigation language.
  2. Lobby for Paid Domestic Violence Leave in your province and collective agreement. Read this tool
  3. Help to bring the role of a Women’s Advocate in your workplace

Please contact me at women@unifor.org if you have any questions about taking action for equity, or pushing back against gender-based violence.
