Unifor schedules the Pride Activist course at the Family Education Centre in Port Elgin. If you are a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender Unifor member and you interested in developing social change skills, you may be interested in attending this course. This course will provide LGBT activists with the tools they need to mobilize, organize, take action on issues facing the LGBT community and the union. The course uses a variety of workshops, open forums, and in-class discussions. Participants will look at major issues such as hate-based violence, LGBT bullying, and the impact of the current political climate on LGBT equality.
After completing this 5 day course Participants will gain practical hands on experience and will be able to:
- Discuss current campaigns and international struggles
- Help to develop a strategy for increasing Unifor’s presence at events such as World AIDS Day, International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia, and Pride
- Develop skills to effect change in the union, the workplace, and the community around LGBT equality issues
- Work effectively within the union and understand how the union has been, and can be, a vehicle for social change
The dates for this course will be posted in 2017 fall schedule. Please note that members must be LGBT members to attend this course. Allies who are interested in working for social change are encouraged to attend the one week Human Rights course which is also scheduled in Port Elgin at the Family Education Centre or the Three-day Human rights course available locally.
