There are new rules for employment insurance. Here’s what you need to know:

For members who have exhausted their existing claims or will be applying for a new claim, please be aware that effective September 26,2021 any new EI claims will follow these new rules. If you have  an existing active claim, the old rules will still apply.

Some of the key changes are:

  1. The minimum hours worked to qualify for a new claim is 420 hours (in the last 52 weeks) and the minimum payment will be  $300 instead of $500. The maximum EI weekly amount is $595.
  2. The one (1) week waiting period for a new claim will now have to be served.
  3. A medical certificate will now be required to be sent in for anyone applying for a new EI sick benefit claim
