Curbside Battery Collection

Did you know that old batteries in the garbage can cause significant environmental damage? Niagara Region has scheduled a battery collection this week, the collection will take place on your regular collection day.  All you need to do is put your household batteries in a clear plastic bag with tape covering the terminals and place the bag beside your recycling bins.  Acceptable Batteries

  • Standard A, AA, AAA, C, D
  • 6V
  • 9V
  • Button Cells (watch batteries, toys, electronics, greeting cards, calculators)
  • Rechargeable battery packs – NiCad, NiMH, or Lithium Ion

Unacceptable Batteries

  • Car batteries (wet lead acid batteries)
  • Industrial batteries
  • Leaking batteries

Batteries not accepted in the curbside collection can be dropped off at a household hazardous waste depot.

Preparing your Batteries for Collection

Step 1 For safety reasons, using masking tape, place tape over both ends/sides of lithium and button cell batteries and 9-volt batteries.

Step 2Place the used batteries in a clear plastic bag and seal. Batteries must be in a clear plastic bag in order to be picked up.

Step 3 On your regular collection day place the sealed bag beside your Blue or Grey Box. Batteries must be visible to the collection staff.

Disposing Batteries Throughout the Year

Residents have a number of options to dispose of batteries year around if they miss their curbside collection date.
