On January 3, 2019 Jordan Lennox and Ashley Kofsky had the distinct pleasure of presenting a check for $1,000 to RAFT St. Catharines on behalf of the Young Workers Committee and the LGBTQ Committee. Both of these committees recognize the importance of services offered by organizations like RAFT. With the increase in youth homelessness and the opioid crisis gripping Niagara, we feel it is extremely important to support services directly involved in addressing the needs of those affected. A recent study done by the Niagara Region examining homelessness in 2018. These are some of the statistics, examining homelessness – however, not accounting fully for the working impoverished:
- Roughly 625 homeless people across the Niagara Region
- 3% of those are aged 16-24 (Roughly 1 in 5)
- 9% of those are aged 25-30 (Roughly 1 in 10)
- Just over 10% described their sexual orientation as non-heterosexual
- 57% identified with suffering from mental health issues
- 2% identified with suffering from forms of addiction
In 2017 Unifor Members and General Motors employees donated $341,250 to United Way St. Catharines and local charities such as: YMCA Move for Strong Kids, Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Build, Start Me Up Niagara’s Coldest Night of the Year, Rankin Cancer Run, Canadian Cancer Society’s Pink Day for breast cancer awareness, Movember, Unifor’s Toonie Tuesday & Christmas Gate Collections, Community Care’s Reindeer Games and the Adopt-a-Family Christmas Campaign. Unifor Local 199 continues to maintain a strong community presence and a strong effort to give back to the communities that we live in. Great work to all members, organizers and volunteers.
