Waste Reduction Week Oct. 17-23, 2016

​NIAGARA REGION, Oct. 3, 2016 – During Waste Reduction Week, Oct. 17-23, Niagara Region will be offering public tours, hosting an information booth and holding a contest to educate residents about the importance of waste reduction.

Residents will have the opportunity to learn what happens to their recycling and waste once it leaves the curb through a tour of the Recycling Centre and of a landfill site.

Recycling Centre Tour
Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016
4935 Kent Avenue, Niagara Falls

Morning Tour: 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Afternoon Tour: 1:15 – 2:15 p.m.

Join Niagara Region and Niagara Recycling for a 45-minute guided tour of Niagara Region’s Recycling Centre. Learn first-hand about the machines, processes and people that sort, bale and ship your recyclables. For safety reasons, closed toed shoes with long pants are required. Individuals must be 10 years of age or older and be able to walk a flight of stairs to participate.

Reservations are required to participate in the tour and space is limited. Spaces can be reserved by calling Niagara Region’s Waste Info-Line at 905-356-4141 or 1-800-594-5542 Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by emailing alison.powell@niagararegion.ca.

Humberstone Landfill Site Tour
Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016
9:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. (tour is 1 hour)

Tour begins at Campbell West entrance, Niagara Region Headquarters, 1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way, Thorold. Tour bus departs for the landfill at 9:30 a.m.

Discover how modern landfills are planned, engineered and monitored and see first-hand why reducing our waste is so important. The tour includes meeting one of the birds of prey that helps control bird populations at the landfill site.

Reservations are required to participate in the tour and space is limited. Spaces can be reserved by calling the Region’s Waste Info-Line at 905-356-4141 or 1-800-594-5542 Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by emailing alison.powell@niagararegion.ca

Residents participating in the tour must wear close-toed shoes and may want to wear some form of protective eyewear (i.e. sunglasses) due to dusty conditions at the landfill site.

Tours and bus transportation to the landfill site are free of charge.

Waste Management Information Booth
Friday Oct. 21, 2016, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Seaway Mall, 800 Niagara Street, Welland

Niagara Region waste management staff will be available to provide information and answer questions on a variety of waste management programs in the Niagara region. Additionally, staff will be selling Blue Boxes, Grey Boxes, Green Bins and Kitchen Catchers.

‘Reuse Your Goods’ Contest Draw
Oct. 17-22, 2016

During Waste Reduction Week, Oct. 17-23, 2016, Niagara Region, in partnership with Goodwill Niagara, encourages residents to reduce their waste through the donation of re-useable goods. Donate a re-usable item at the Humberstone Reusable Goods Drop-off located at the Humberstone Landfill site in Welland between Oct.17-23 and receive a ballot to enter a draw for a $50 Seaway Mall gift card. Acceptable donations are at the discretion of the attendant.
